Decide what the chair will do
An accent chair is easy to admire in a listing and harder to place when it arrives. Before arranging collection, decide whether the chair is for reading, short visits, getting dressed or occasional extra seating. Those jobs call for different dimensions and comfort expectations. A sculptural chair used for five minutes may be a poor choice for an hour with a book.
Measure the available room position with the furniture already in place. Include the space needed to sit down and stand up, not only the chair's outer footprint. If the proposed position blocks a cupboard or narrows the main walking route, reconsider it before investigating the fabric. A lower price does not create more floor area.
Ask for useful photographs
Request clear photographs of the front, back, arms, legs, underside and any visible wear. Ask the seller to describe defects rather than relying on the phrase good condition. Look for information about whether covers are removable and what care instructions are available. Do not assume that a stain or odor will disappear after cleaning.
Keep your questions specific and proportionate. A photograph of a joint or damaged seam is more useful than another distant picture of the whole room. If the seller cannot supply information that matters to your decision, treat that uncertainty as part of the choice rather than filling the gaps with optimistic guesses.
Inspect before committing
Where possible, inspect the chair in person and check whether it feels stable under ordinary use. Do not use furniture that appears structurally unsound. Look at upholstery, seams and accessible framework for damage, and consider whether the condition is something you can realistically maintain. Follow appropriate local guidance if there are concerns about pests or hygiene; a quick surface wipe is not proof that an upholstered object is suitable to bring home.
Check any labels and care information still present. If the chair requires specialist repair or reupholstery, obtain an appropriate quote before buying. Include transport and professional work in the total cost. A low purchase price can be outweighed by work that is difficult to estimate from a listing.
Measure the entire collection route
Compare the chair's dimensions with the vehicle, building entrance, stairs, elevator and room doorway. Ask whether parts are designed to detach and whether instructions are available. Do not assume that legs can be removed simply because similar chairs have removable legs.
Plan the lifting and transport with suitable help and equipment. Protect the chair and the building without using wrapping or straps in a way that damages the upholstery or frame. If the route cannot accommodate it, decline the purchase before collection. Discovering the problem at the front door creates pressure to improvise and can turn an optional furnishing into a costly obstacle.
Place it before buying accessories
Once the chair is home and suitable for use, try it in the intended position before adding a throw, cushion or side table. Sit in it during the activity it was chosen for. The seat may need a different relationship to the lamp or a little more clearance beside the sofa.
Our living-room guide can help balance the chair with existing furniture. If reading is the main purpose, use the reading-corner guide to check the lamp and nearby surface. Add textiles only when they solve a comfort or care need, rather than automatically buying a complete styled scene.
Secondhand-chair questions
Is a cover an answer to worn upholstery? It can change appearance if the chair is otherwise suitable, but it does not fix structural problems or establish cleanliness. Investigate the underlying condition first.
Should a chair match the sofa? Shared colors or proportions can connect different pieces. A complete set is unnecessary if each item works in the room.
When is it sensible to walk away? When condition, access, repair costs or suitability remain too uncertain for your situation. Keeping an empty corner is a reasonable choice while you look for a chair that can be assessed properly.
