May 30 The Miami Vibe of Spring and Summer and Trend Forecast- Is Neo Mint Green the New Pink?

Pick up any interiors magazine and you will find a raft of photos of lilac, pistachio, mint, candy pink, peach and yellow furniture and accessories, the colours of 1930s Miami, 1950s Palm Springs or alternatively gelato ice cream. Pastels, which have traditionally been used in kids rooms or as part of a shabby chic style, have suddenly gone modern.

This Pastel Colour Trend started to appear in design fairs in 2018 for Spring and Summer and has started to make its way into mainstream interiors in 2019. Interior styles typically follow fashion and often slightly behind the curve, but over the last year we have seen these colours on both the catwalk and in interior magazines. These colours are also trending in bathrooms where ice cream colours sit beautifully against metallic taps that have been around for a few years now.

Ice Cream colours are part of the new neutral trend, since they can be layered on walls and through accessories to replace white as a more confident, bold way of decorating, with a nod to retro vibes and the seventies trend we are seeing in interiors at the moment. The colours work well together so there is no need to stick to just one. Indeed, as you will see in the images below, a combo of the colours works very well.

Ice Cream or pastel colours belong to a pale colour family usually described as “soothing”, “soft”, “near neutral”, “milky”, “washed out” and “desaturated” but that doesn’t mean they don’t pack a punch in your home, especially through the modern trend where they are mixed together to make a statement. Rather, the move towards “softer neutrals” is a nod to the world we currently live in. Burn-out is now categorised as a chronic condition. Here in the UK, 6 in 10 adults think Brexit is affecting their mental health. And, 2018 was a turbulent, unpredictable year, where many people were overwhelmed by the news and demands upon their time, causing us to retreat into spaces where we feel safe and cocooned; our homes. I often write about how colour can have a positive impact on your mood and soft soothing colour, especially these colours which can really lift your home for spring, can do just that.

If you want a prediction on a trend for next year (2020) then we should look no further than mint green and so I continue my green colour series looking at this colour.

Green is fast becoming a dedicated colour in interiors, in almost the same way that grey has been over recent years. This comes as no surprise, given it is a calming and soothing colour, helps us to slow down and relax and the fact that there is a big trend in biophilic design; bringing natural textures and the outside in. You won’t be short of choice since green comes in so many shades from a deep forest green to emerald and olive and lighter colours such as mint or pistachio.

I love green, starting initially with my green velvet sofa, but rapidly moving to my deep emerald bedroom, and I suspect if I have my way olive green will make an appearance in my interiors sometime soon too. You can read about the psychology behind green here.

But today we are focusing on a lighter green since trend predictors WGSN are predicting neo mint green as the colour for spring summer 2020. A move away from more feminine colours of pink and yellow to a more gender-neutral colour of mint. A hint to a clean fresh vibe.

Since mint works well with the ice cream colours that we are already seeing in interiors at the moment, there is no reason to wait until next year to start using it, if you want a fresher, cleaner vibe to your home.

So, how do you go about embracing mint green in your home?

Mint green works well with other pastel colours which you can see in the images above. It also works well with a deeper green. You could paint your walls in mint green for a fresh look and ground the scheme with forest green woodwork or home accessories. The colour also works well with pink and an abundance of wood or rattan (other textures that are key trends in interiors at the moment). And, not forgetting it works incredibly well with plants, allowing you to bring the outside in.

Mint Green is also trending in bathrooms and kitchens. Embrace the colour through tiles, or perhaps even consider you bathroom furniture, or kitchen cabinets.
