Heal's at Redbrick- Contemporary Lighting for your Home

Today we are focusing on lighting, contemporary lighting for your home, and since Heal's at Redbrick houses the largest contemporary lighting collection in Yorkshire, I'm going to explore their collections in more detail below.

Heal's

Heal's opened their first store in London over 200 years ago in 1810 and moved to their Flagship store in Tottenham Court Road in 1818. Heal's is an iconic furniture, accessory and lighting brand with 6 stores in the UK, and with an extensive ground floor showroom at Redbrick.

It has become known for promoting modern design and working with new and established global designers to bring you the latest items for your home; from beautiful smelling candles to Italian leather sofas.

Heal's Lighting at Redbrick.

The team at Redbrick Heal’s are all trained in providing support to guide customers to find the light most suitable for their requirements and home. Heal's Redbrick have the facility in order to be able to show the full range switched on and off easily, as well as showing pieces that require feature bulbs (with a variety of bulbs (as well as being able to change bulbs so customers can see exactly what they want to buy in situ during the decision-making process)).

Heals stock their own range of lighting as well as featured brands such as Tom Dixon, Tom Raffield, Gubi, Anglepoise, Flos and Tala, which I will come onto shortly.

Heal's Own Brand Lighting

Junction Chandelier

Junction Chandelier

In Heal's own lighting range you will find best-sellers such as Junction (above photo) and Bristol (further below), both of which have new additions for Autumn 2018

Junction Lighting

With its thin, understated profile, the Junction lamp makes a versatile and stylish feature light for sleek modern schemes. The Junction is Heal's best-selling lighting collection in Copper, and Black and now has a new Brass/ Walnut introduction in response to modern material trends.

Heal's have seen a move away from the high shine, perfect finish of gold towards an antique brass tone with a warmer aesthetic, pleasing patina and great reflective qualities. Brass introduces a richer tone and softer reflections into a room.

Brass also has a sense of inherent quality. Lots of touch points from our past, like door knockers, handles and handrails have traditionally been made from brass and now Heal's are seeing a move of this very liveable tone into more interior spaces. Unlike the cool simplicity of silver, brashness of copper or sharpness of black, warm metals like antique brass speak to a much more diverse and varied design heritage. This new finish moves Junction from a simple contemporary form to a classic design statement with ultimate longevity.

Bristol Lighting

Mixed materials is a big interiors theme of 2018, and we will see it coming through in lighting too. Adding texture and life to the most basic of products is a great way to add warmth and interest to your home.

From this trend, Terrazzo has risen as the material of the moment. From its starting point as hard-wearing flooring made by setting chips of natural stone in concrete, Heal's have used it to add an element of fun to their best-selling Bristol collection.

As it’s made with any stone, the potential for so many different patterns and colours makes it the perfect colour injection to the collection. As a natural and sustainable material, it also means every piece is unique.

Terrazzo is so popular because the warm mix of colours means that it does not clash with an interiors scheme, and it hides marks well. It also blends with the current Bristol colour options allowing Heal's customers the chance to experiment with clusters, and multi-light options to infuse subtle yet effective modern interest into their home.

Both of these ranges work brilliantly with the Tala LED bulbs with the look of each piece being transformed from elegant to industrial by the choice of bulb. Tala is a young design-led British brand, which aims to promote "conservation through beauty" by promoting the low carbon economy through the use of LED technology and product design.

Kyoto Lighting

New for Autumn 2018, Kyoto is Heal's new electroplated glass collection, showcasing 3 shapes- long, globe and wide. Glass is an old favourite and consistent best-selling material but smoked or black glass has a timeless, refined appearance, adding depth to a contemporary space. With its electroplated finish, illuminating Kyoto gives a space two completely different senses. When the pendant is off, there is a contemporary solid mirrored effect but when the light is on, the interaction of the filament bulb with the mirrored finish creates a series of reflections- creating two completely different pendant looks from one design.

Designed in Demark and exclusive to Heal’s, Kyoto is hand-blown in Poland to infuse traditional glass-making techniques into a modern design. Used in clusters, Kyoto is the perfect interpretation of a modern chandelier whilst single pendants add a subtle drama to an interior, perhaps on either side of a sofa or bed.

Heal's Branded Lighting

Heal's stock a wide range of branded lighting in addition to their own ranges. A few examples of these contemporary light brands can be seen below.

Tom Dixon.

A self-taught designer, Tom Dixon's designs are instantly recognisable for their sculptural design and engineering quality. Known for creating work of art out of everyday objects, Tom Dixon's designs have been acquired by museums across the globe.

Paul Smith

A collaboration between Paul Smith and Anglepoise sees the Type 75 desk lamp decorated in a colourful limited edition design.

Flos.

For over 50 years Flos have pioneered cutting edge lighting designers. Their range includes Glo Ball, IC T/F/S lamps, Phillipe Stark, Arrangements, Aim, Ktribe and others.

I chose the IC T1 table lamp from this collection when styling my living room at the entrance to Redbrick which you can read about here.

Tom Raffield

Tom Raffield designs wooden handcrafted lighting from his studio in Cornwall, each piece made with sustainable wood using traditional processes.

The process of stem bending wood is used to create individual pieces of art as lighting for your home.

If you want contemporary lighting for you home, then you won't go too far wrong to visit a Heal's showroom. Redbrick Heal's has an extensive ground floor showroom, almost as soon as you walk in through the entrance, to your right, where you can see all of the lights I've described in this blog post, along with a range of bulbs to choose from and staff on hand to help you choose.

See you there!
